The Desert Communities EAC is a non profit organization dedicated to keeping California business informed on workforce laws and human resource issues. We are an event partner with the Employment Development Department.
Our attendees will learn, critical tips for your day-to-day management of personnel issues, in light of the new 2023 labor laws. In their description of “A Day in the Life of an H.R. Professional,” Vee Sotelo and Karen Sloat will present the hottest legal problems their clients confront, such as:
- How to manage timekeeping and wage liability, when employees work incidental time, travel to and from job sites, or have start up tasks before work?
- How to manage the ever-changing meal and rest period rules, when employees refuse to follow policies, don’t care about labor law compliance, and “round” their time?
- How to handle the increasing employee complaints and the employer’s duty to investigate, when we know the complaints are baseless and investigations are expensive?
- How to manage on site Cannabis use, new protections for employee privacy, employee communications about contraceptive use, and other treacherous new legal hurdles?
- How to navigate leave requests, with or without pay, when the laws keep changing and employees seem to be hoping we’ll make a mistake?

Karen J. Sloat has a law career spanning over 30 years in many practice areas, and in three states – California, Colorado and Hawaii. Her reputation and experience as a zealous advocate in labor and employment law enables her growing team to handle claims concerning complex wage and hour violations, discrimination and harassment, employment contracts, trade secret violations, fraud and all other employment-related issues with excellence – for employees and employers all over southern California.

This meeting has been approved for recertification credit hours toward aPHR™, PHR®, PHRca®, SPHR®, GPHR®, PHRi™ and SPHRi™ recertification through HR Certification Institute® (HRCI®). It has been recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.”
